John Howard Mawdsley, Age 26
Private, 24622, 8th Battalion, King's Shropshire Light Infantry.
John was the second son of Mr W H Mawdsley of Oakengates but had married and was living at 16 Frame Lane, Horsehay with his wife and daughter at the time of his enlistment.

He had worked as a clerk for both the Lilleshall Company and Siemens of Stafford prior to joining up.
John died of wounds whilst a prisoner of war in Bulgaria on the 27th December 1916. Private George Morris shed some light on John’s capture when he wrote home sometime later in March 1917 “I daresay you know that just before Christmas we made an attack and we lost about 70 men killed wounded or missing — I am glad to say none of the Dawley lads got killed but T Phillips got a bad wound in the arm and T Corbett of Hinkshay a slight wound in the same place. We think that John Mawdsley is with 13 others who were captured and if so, he is in the hands of the Bulgars”.
A memorial service was held for John at the Wombridge Parish Church on May 30th 1918

John was born in 1890, his father was a boot and shoe maker and they living at 43, Market Street, Oakengates.
On the 26th Dec 1914 John married Alice Holloway at Dawley-Parva (probably St Lukes Church Doseley) as she had living in Frame Lane all her life, on the 9th March 1916 their daughter Dorothy Joan Mawdsley was born.
